Many Home Depot and Lowes have a battery recycling box located near the entrance of the store.  You can use this tool to locate the nearest drop-off location.

Option 2:

You can carefully ship the items back to us.  Please ensure to tape over all terminals so there is no possibility of the batteries coming into contact with other metal.  UPS or FedEx ground are the least restrictive shipping options, make sure to follow all regulations when shipping li-ion batteries.

Here's why unprotected battery terminals are dangerous and why they should be protected. Batteries may hold a residual charge even when they appear dead. When this battery comes into contact with other batteries or metal, a spark or heat can occur.

Sparks and heat can cause smoke, fires, and explosions resulting in property damage or physical injury.

When clear plastic bags are not available, you can tape each battery. For AA, AAA, C, and D batteries tape the positive terminal (the one with the bump). For other battery types, tape the charging terminals.Do not use any of the following to protect battery terminals: colored bags, grocery bags, paper bags, parrafin or other dripping products, painters tape, masking tape, or scotch tape. You can use these kinds of tape (clear preferred): clear packing tape, duct tape, non-conductive electrical tape. Only tape the terminals, do not cover the entire battery or the chemistry type on the label. What happens to a recycled battery? The recycled materials that come from batteries are used to manufaucture new products such as: new batteries, sunscreen, stainless steel pots and pans, golf clubs, silverware, asphalt for roads. Plus, the batteries are kept out of the landfills!
